Warm greetings from the Central Valley!

As Costa Rica begins its lush transition into the later half of the rainy season, September brings something more than just misty mountain views and blooming tropical flowers—it brings patriotism. With Costa Rican Independence Day on the 15th, this month is an excellent time to connect with your community, learn more about the country’s cultural roots, and experience local traditions firsthand. Whether you’re visiting, planning to move, or already living here, it’s a beautiful reminder of why so many are choosing to call Costa Rica home.

This month’s newsletter includes:

  • Why Expats Choose Costa Rica
  • Restaurant Spotlight: Ajúa – Authentic Mexican in Escazú
  • National Anthem: Spanish with English Translation
  • Featured Property: Condo Alcanto 303, Santa Ana

Why Are So Many Expats Choosing to Call Costa Rica Home?

Costa Rica has topped the charts again, this time leading Latin America in attracting high-net-worth expats. But the appeal of this small yet dynamic country extends far beyond wealth migration statistics.

Many expats choose Costa Rica for the high quality of life, low crime rates, excellent private healthcare, and a culture that values wellness, family, and nature. Whether it’s early retirees, digital nomads, families seeking bilingual education, or eco-conscious investors, Costa Rica offers a safe, modern, and deeply rewarding lifestyle.

  • Year-round warm climate
    No more winter blues! With tropical and temperate microclimates ranging from coastal breezes to cool mountain air, you can choose your ideal weather. Many expats are drawn to the Central Valley for its consistently spring-like temperatures throughout the year.
  • Stable democracy with no military
    Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and has since invested in education, healthcare, and environmental protection. Its longstanding political stability and democratic institutions make it one of the safest and most progressive countries in Latin America.
  • Fast-growing expat communities in Escazú, Santa Ana, Grecia, Nosara, Belen, and Tamarindo
    These areas offer modern amenities, walkable town centers, international schools, and a welcoming blend of locals and foreigners. Whether you’re looking for mountain tranquility, coastal surf culture, or upscale suburban living, there’s a place to fit every lifestyle.
  • Improved infrastructure and increasing international connectivity
    New highways, modern hospitals, and improved utilities are making it easier than ever to live comfortably. International airports in Liberia and San José make travel seamless, and high-speed internet has become widely available in both urban and rural areas.
  • Rich cultural experiences
    From traditional fiestas patronales and farmers’ markets to world-class theater and contemporary art galleries, Costa Rica offers immersive experiences that go far beyond the beach. You can learn to dance cumbia, take part in a local procession, or enjoy a Guanacaste-style cena típica.
  • Strong English programs and language learning opportunities
    Many expat families choose Costa Rica for its bilingual private schools, where students graduate fluent in both Spanish and English. For adults, there are excellent Spanish immersion programs and local tutors available across the country. Language learning is part of the expat adventure—and Costa Ricans (or Ticos) are famously patient and encouraging with learners.

If you’re considering making the move or investing, now is a great time to explore.

Restaurant Spotlight: Ajúa – Mexican Cuisine in Escazú

Looking for Mexican food that hits the spot? Ajúa, located in the heart of Escazú, offers a vibrant dining experience with an authentic menu that locals and expats rave about.

Anthony’s recommendation:

  • Fried Chimichangas – golden, crisp, and packed with flavor
  • Burritos – available in sizes from small to muy grande to match your appetite

With friendly service and a casual atmosphere, Ajúa is a great option for lunch or dinner with friends. It’s also an easy stop after showings in the Escazú area.

Celebrating Costa Rica’s Independence Day – September 15

Costa Rica’s Independence Day is a festive and meaningful holiday celebrated with music, dancing, parades, and time-honored traditions. Whether you’re a newcomer or a seasoned resident, it’s worth participating in the cultural events that surround this day.

Faroles – The Lantern Tradition

On the evening of September 14, children across Costa Rica take to the streets holding handmade lanterns, known as faroles. These lanterns symbolize the Torch of Freedom, representing the announcement of independence from Spain in 1821 as it traveled across Central America.

Faroles often take the form of houses, stars, oxcarts, or torches. Schools host events where children sing, recite poems, and walk with their lanterns lit, creating a heartwarming atmosphere that draws families and neighbors together.

The Torch of Independence

The actual Torch of Independence is carried each year by relay runners from Guatemala to Cartago. The torch route is a deeply symbolic act of unity among the Central American countries. Costa Rican students participate by running segments with the flame, culminating in patriotic celebrations in town centers and schools.

How to Join In

  • Attend a faroles parade at a local school or plaza (often Sept. 14 at 6 PM)
  • Learn the National Anthem (see below!)
  • Dress in traditional colors (white, blue, red)
  • Visit central town squares or cultural centers for folkloric dancing and live marimba music
  • Watch the torch runners if you’re near the Inter-American Highway

Costa Rica’s National Anthem

Sing Along This Independence Day

It’s customary for Costa Ricans to stand and sing the National Anthem at 6:00 PM on the evening of September 14. Here is the Spanish version with a line-by-line English translation.

Himno Nacional de Costa Rica

(Costa Rican National Anthem)

¡Noble patria!, tu hermosa bandera
Oh noble homeland, your beautiful flag

expresión de tu vida nos da;
gives us expression of your life;

bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo
under the clear blue of your sky

blanca y pura descansa la paz.
white and pure rests peace.

En la lucha tenaz, de fecunda labor,
In the tenacious struggle of fruitful labor,

que enrojece del hombre la faz;
that reddens the face of man;

conquistaron tus hijos, labriegos sencillos,
your children, simple farmers, conquered

𝄆 eterno prestigio, estima y honor. 𝄇
𝄆 eternal prestige, esteem, and honor. 𝄇

¡Salve, oh tierra gentil!
Hail, oh gentle land!

¡Salve, oh madre de amor!
Hail, oh mother of love!

Cuando alguno pretenda tu gloria manchar,
When someone attempts to tarnish your glory,

verás a tu pueblo, valiente y viril,
you will see your people, brave and strong,

la tosca herramienta en arma trocar.
turn their rustic tools into weapons.

¡Salve, oh patria!, tu pródigo suelo
Hail, oh homeland! Your generous soil

dulce abrigo y sustento nos da;
gives us sweet shelter and sustenance;

bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo,
under the clear blue of your sky,

¡vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!
may work and peace always live on!
