Recent Developments in Costa Rica

Innovative Conservation Efforts in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is pioneering a unique approach to forest conservation by utilizing bioacoustics. Monica Retamosa, a researcher specializing in bioacoustics, has dedicated two decades to studying and preserving ecosystems in the AmistOsa Biological Corridor through sound analysis. By recording natural sounds, researchers can monitor biodiversity and detect changes in ecosystems. This non-invasive method employs automated recording technology to monitor areas over extended periods, providing valuable data for conservation efforts. The integration of advanced AI and machine learning has further enhanced species identification from soundscapes, offering deeper insights into ecological dynamics.

Tourism in Costa Rica: A Sustainable and Inclusive Approach

Costa Rica’s tourism sector is experiencing significant growth, with a record number of international arrivals. In the first half of 2024, the country welcomed 1,532,443 tourists by air, marking a 14.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge is attributed to the expansion of flight routes and the introduction of new airlines, such as GOL from Brazil. The Ministry of Tourism emphasizes that this growth is aligned with the National Tourism Plan 2022-2027, which focuses on sustainable, innovative, and inclusive tourism practices. The government is also implementing measures to support micro and small tourism enterprises, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are widely distributed across the country.

Vuelta a Costa Rica 2024: A Cycling Milestone

The 58th edition of the Vuelta a Costa Rica, a prestigious road cycling competition, took place from December 13 to 22, 2024. The event covered a total distance of 1,420 kilometers over ten stages, traversing all provinces of Costa Rica. The race commenced in Heredia and concluded with the traditional “Circuito Presidente” in the same province. This annual competition is part of the UCI America Tour 2025 under category 2.2, attracting cyclists from around the world and showcasing Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes.

Miss Universe Costa Rica 2025: A New Selection Process

The Miss Universe Costa Rica 2025 pageant is scheduled for July 19, 2025. For the first time, the selection process will be conducted regionally, allowing each region to choose a delegate who will advance directly to the final gala. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and ensure broader representation across the country. The winner will represent Costa Rica at the Miss Universe 2025 competition, with the venue yet to be announced.

Public Education and Social Rights Mobilization

In response to concerns over public education and social rights, various organizations in Costa Rica have mobilized to advocate for reforms. On August 28, 2024, a multi-sector national mobilization took place in the capital, with participants marching under the slogan “Education today, peace tomorrow.” The movement seeks to address issues such as the reduction of investment in education, which fell to 5.2% of GDP in 2023, and to promote a fair tax transformation to combat inequality. The organizers are calling for the reactivation of the National Pact for Public Education to improve the country’s educational system and social rights.
